Caps Drinking Game and Rules
Caps is a game that is usually played with 4 people and in a room that is about 10 feet in length from wall to wall. A good supply of twist-off caps from beer bottles, 2 coffee mugs, and 2 saucer plates are also needed to play the game.
This is one of those games that takes both patience and skill. Beginners often find it hard to score until they are familiar how to shoot the cap. But after the difficult learning curve (sometimes up to half an hour), it’s one of the best drinking games out there. Yes, it gives beer pong a good run for the money!
How To Play
![]() | This game is played with 2 teams consisting of 2 people per team. Each team sits with their back against the wall on opposite sides of the room. The goal of Caps is to be the first team to score 10 points. To score points, each team takes alternating turns throwing a cap across the room into a beer filled coffee mug which is sitting on a small saucer plate. Example: The throwing order would be: |
![]() | When a team successfully shoots a cap into the beer filled mug, the opposing team gets one more shot (called a rebuttal) to cancel out the shot that was just made. If this rebuttal shot is made, no team scores. If the rebuttal shot is missed, the team that made the shot gets a point and the team that just got scored on must drink the entire mug of beer and then refill it. |
![]() | If a shot ever bounces out of the mug or skips off the surface of the beer, it does not count as a shot made. Tip: We suggest filling the mug to the top and removing any foam to increase the likelihood of your opponents cap skipping out! |
![]() | If a shot bounces off the floor, a wall, another player, or anything else and lands in the mug, it counts as a shot being made. In general, bounce-ins are more of a 'lucky' shot and happen more often depending on the throwing style and placement of the mug. Tip: To help prevent bounce-ins from the opposing team, we recommend:
|
![]() | As soon as the beer cap bounces off a wall, floor, player, etc. the defending team is allowed to swat the cap away. If the mug is knocked over while attempting to swat a cap away, a point is scored for the shooting team. Tip: Swatting a cap away is never easy (even when sober) and can sometimes knock a cap into the mug! We suggest ‘pinning’ a cap to the ground immediately after it hits instead of swatting at them. |
How To Throw A Cap
![]() | This is the basic way to hold a cap that most players use. The leading edge of the cap is lightly squeezed between the pointer finger and thumb. |
![]() | When shooting the cap, the pointer finger and thumb are separated and the cap is sent in an end-over-end arching motion toward the mug on the other side of the room. The amount of arc put on the throw varies from player to player. Higher arcing shot are less prone to skipping out of the mug and also have a better chance to bounce into the mug off of the floor, but they are usually harder to aim and get the correct distance. Practice makes perfect; do what feels the most comfortable. |
Miscellaneous
For a cleaner game, water can be placed inside of the mug instead of beer and players can then drink from their own drink or share a beer from a bottle or can.
Players can determine how much should be drank on each point instead of sharing an entire beer between teammates.
When a player continually hits the side of the mug or saucer making a ‘tinging’ sound, this is know as “chiming”. Players are encouraged to announce that they are “chiming” or make remarks about other shots to frustrate the other team.
